Like the original game, the goal is whatever you make of it. Your health and hunger are shown at the bottom of the screen along with whatever you're carrying. If you lose all your hearts, you'll need to respawn and get back to where you left off. You can change the goals and rules of the world via mods and seeds.
When you start, you'll spawn in an open field with nothing. This is your chance to explore and interact with the world to see what you can do with all the different blocks. You can craft simple things within your inventory and from there you can build things that will help you craft even bigger things. This can be anything from tools to weapons to armor to furniture and more. You also interact with the wildlife and hostels for additional materials while trying to build your base or simply survive long enough to keep exploring.

This is a game that is best approached with a guide on the basics. This way you can get a solid start and begin to expand from there to figure out what you want to do and where you want to go. Just be sure that you have a shelter or way to defend yourself when night falls.
